Short answer: Mailflare is an open-source application for custom-domain email and related workspace features that you deploy in your own Cloudflare account or on your own server. It can be an appealing option for developers and self-hosters, but “free” describes the software—not necessarily every part of running it. Setup, email delivery, storage, domain renewal, backups and security remain the operator’s responsibility.

The Instagram Reel introduces Mailflare as a way to create addresses such as hello@yourdomain.com without relying on a conventional hosted inbox. The project is real and its repository describes a self-hosted email workspace. But the clip is a teaser, not a complete installation guide—and a few of its broadest claims need context.

What is Mailflare?

Mailflare is an AGPL-3.0-licensed open-source project that provides a web inbox for custom domains. Its current feature list includes personal and shared mailboxes, sending and receiving email, routing rules, calendar events, public booking pages, contacts, search and administration tools. It also supports file storage for a Drive-like experience and an optional AI assistant for searching mail, drafting replies and managing calendar events.

Mailflare is not a Cloudflare-operated email subscription. The project runs in your Cloudflare account using Cloudflare services, or can be deployed as a Docker container on a server you manage. In either case, you are installing and administering the software. Mailflare’s deployment guide covers the setup flow, required scoped Cloudflare API permissions, domain configuration and updates.

Is Mailflare really free?

The code is free to use under its open-source license, and some provider free tiers may be enough for light use. That does not make every deployment free or unlimited. A custom domain can have a renewal fee; storage and compute may have usage limits or charges; and sending email depends on which delivery provider you choose.

Part of the setupWhat to know
Incoming mailCloudflare Email Routing can route incoming messages and is available on Workers Free and Paid plans. It requires the domain to use Cloudflare DNS.
Outgoing mailCloudflare Email Sending is a separate service. Cloudflare says sending to arbitrary recipients requires Workers Paid; sending to verified destination addresses is free.
Other providersMailflare can also use Resend or Amazon SES. Each has its own pricing, quotas, configuration and delivery rules; new SES accounts start in a restricted sandbox.
Infrastructure and upkeepDomain registration, higher usage, storage, backups and any Docker server can add cost or ongoing work.

Cloudflare’s Email Service overview distinguishes inbound Email Routing from outbound Email Sending, and its Workers pricing page lists the current plan terms. Check those pages and the Mailflare provider guide before estimating your own monthly bill, because prices and limits can change.

What the Reel shows—and what it doesn’t

The Reel shows parts of Mailflare’s inbox, domain and mailbox screens, along with calendar and booking interfaces. It also asks viewers to comment “email” to request a full tutorial. It does not walk through deploying the app, connecting DNS records, setting up an email-sending provider, testing deliverability or configuring backups. Those steps matter: Mailflare’s own deployment instructions call for a Cloudflare account token with carefully scoped permissions, and the app must be set up against a domain you control.

Mailflare’s repository lists multiple domains, mailboxes, routing and storage features, but “unlimited” should not be interpreted as unlimited capacity. Provider quotas, account limits, storage use and service terms still apply. Start with one test domain and mailbox, verify that inbound and outbound messages work reliably, and check the relevant provider limits before migrating business-critical mail.

Does “on Cloudflare” mean your data is automatically safe?

No hosting provider can make a blanket promise that an application’s data can never be exposed. Deploying Mailflare in your own account can give you more control over where its database and files are stored, but security still depends on account access, API-token scope, application configuration, updates, backups and the email providers that handle messages. Self-hosting is not the same as a guarantee of end-to-end encryption or zero-access privacy.

An independent hands-on Mailflare review describes the project as a better fit for people comfortable with Cloudflare and system administration than for users who want a hands-off mailbox with support and delivery guarantees. That is a useful distinction: if missing an important message is unacceptable, test the service thoroughly and consider keeping a managed provider as your primary inbox.

The optional AI assistant also deserves care because it works with mailbox data. Mailflare’s documentation says auto-drafting is a separate opt-in and generated replies remain drafts for a reviewer to approve before sending. Even so, review the permissions and data handling of any AI or MCP integration before connecting it to a work mailbox.

Who should consider Mailflare?

Mailflare may suit developers, small teams and self-hosters who want to experiment with custom-domain email, are comfortable managing DNS and credentials, and value control over their deployment. It is less suitable for someone expecting a zero-setup replacement for Google Workspace or Outlook, guaranteed deliverability, a support desk or security without ongoing administration.

Before switching, compare the features you actually use—mail-client compatibility, calendars, shared inboxes, account recovery, retention, compliance, backups and support. Then deploy a test mailbox, send to several major providers, check spam placement and verify that you can restore a backup. A successful dashboard demo is only the first step toward a dependable email service.

Frequently asked questions

Can Mailflare create email addresses on my domain?

Yes. Mailflare is designed to connect domains you control and manage custom-domain mailboxes. You still need to configure the domain and choose how messages are received and sent.

Can Mailflare replace Google Workspace or Outlook?

It may cover some needs, including custom-domain email, calendars and booking pages, but it is not automatically a like-for-like managed-service replacement. Check your required features, reliability, administration and support needs before migrating.

Is Mailflare hosted by Cloudflare?

It can run on Cloudflare infrastructure in the operator’s account, or in Docker on a server the operator manages. It is a self-deployed project, not a Cloudflare-operated hosted mailbox product.

Is Mailflare free to run?

The software is open source, but total cost depends on the domain, compute and storage usage, server choice and mail-sending provider. Cloudflare Email Sending to arbitrary recipients requires a Paid Workers plan; other providers have their own current pricing and limits.

Bottom line: Mailflare is a substantial self-hosted email-workspace project—not a magic “free email with no limits” button. The official repository is the place to review the code, license and current deployment instructions. See the original Reel for the short overview, but use the project and provider documentation to plan an actual deployment.
