YouTube Music is taking on Spotify, Apple Music, and various others with the launch of three personalized playlists, including its version of Spotify’s Discover Weekly, called Discover Mix, also a New Release Mix and Your Mix.

The Story of Discover Mix

Discover Mix had been detected in the wild while testing, but now all three are globally accessible to YouTube Music users.

The company’s strategies to add these new mixes were announced this fall at the TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2019, where YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan expressed about the service’s plans to use a blend of machine learning and human curation to enhance the music service’s offerings.

The Discover Mix is pretty much like Spotify’s Discover Weekly, as it will concentrate on assisting users in uncovering new artists and music they like.

Including the tracks you have never heard before as well as lesser-known tracks from artists you previously love.

But unlike on opponent music services, this playlist can leverage traditional listening data on both YouTube Music and on YouTube itself.

The mix, which refreshes every Wednesday, will provide listeners with 50 tracks every week.

The New Release Mix, as you can imagine, centers on all the recent releases by your preferred artists and others YouTube thinks you’ll like.

This one releases every Friday, as most new releases do, but will include other tracks mid-week as required.

Lastly, Your Mix is a playlist that links the music you love with songs you haven’t heard still yet will presumably be like, based on your listening habits.

This one regularly refreshes to stay active.

YoutTube’s Personalization

Of course, the longer you hear on YouTube Music, the better the mixes will become.

But YouTube states that it can provide personalized mixes as soon as a user chooses a couple of artists they like while the setup process or after they hear a couple of songs.

The mixes come at a time when Google is further heavily investing in its streaming music service.

Earlier this fall, it executed YouTube Music, the default music app that sails with new Android devices, instead of Google Play Music.

And lately, reports show that YouTube Music is ahead of Spotify and JioSaavn in India, a principal business for Spotify, despite its late entry.

The latest mixes are active on YouTube Music on iOS, Android, and the web.
