Rockstar Games has issued a statement that confirms that the company was a victim of network intrusion. As a result, over 90 videos of the early stage development of GTA 6 were leaked by a hacker.

Rockstar said that the intrusion meant that an illegal third party gained access to “confidential information” from their systems. Rockstar Games also confirmed that this hiccup will not have any effect on the development timeline and live game services.

As of now, Rockstar has not disclosed the dates of GTA 6’s release. However, it is predicted that the game will release either in 2024 or 2025.

What was in the GTA 6 leaked footage?

The leaked footage offered a glimpse into GTA 6’s development, gameplay, and game’s engine. Besides, it has also confirmed initial reports that we would see a female protagonist for the first time in a Vice City setting.

The leaked GTA 6 footage was posted by “tepotuberhacker” on the GTA Forums. The user shared different clips of the game’s open world in action from what seems to be an early development build.

The video appears to be from builds that are at least a few years old, showing that work has been ongoing concurrently with recent GTA V content upgrades.

Rockstar, in a statement, said, “We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto.”

The company also said that it is disappointed that these details were leaked and shared with the community in this manner. Further, the gaming company also said that the development of GTA 6 will proceed as planned and that they remain committed to delivering a jaw-dropping experience for everyone who is eagerly awaiting the game’s release.

This will be the first mainline game of the series since the release of GTA 5 in 2013. Rockstar said that it will issue an update soon and introduce everyone to GTA 6 when the development is ready.

What does the hacker expect from Rockstar?

It appears that the hacker which goes by the name “teapotuberhacker” is looking to negotiate with Rockstar.

According to an insider, Tom Henderson, the hacker wants those in charge of corporations and game creation to come to him. His aim is to blackmail the company into paying him a large chunk of money for not leaking any more material to the public.

Someone pretending to be a Rockstar employee contacted the hacker after he posted his contact information, mocked the developers and submitted a log check to prove his intrusion into the system.

The hacker claims that the files and documentation for the game’s most recent version will not be sold for less than a five-figure sum. The GTA 6 source codes are not currently available for purchase.
