Roblox announces acquisition of Discord rival Guilded

Developer of online game creation system, Roblox Corporation has announced that it will be acquiring a privately held organization, Guilded, Inc., that’s primarily focused on building platforms for connecting gaming communities.

Essentially, Guilded has been working on developing a chat platform for gamers, just like Discord. The M&A move has been made by Roblox in order to boost its social infrastructure. Neither of the parties involved have disclosed the amount at which the deal was finalized.

Roblox Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Baszucki said that the team of Guilded has a clear passion for empowering communities. He added that they have the right team and the technology and they’re excited to help Guilded continue on their growth path. 

CEO and Founder of Guilded, Mr Eli Brown said that the mission of Guilded is to connect gaming communities. The company enables communities to communicate and connect with the world in new, meaningful ways.

Brown adds that Guilded has been working on some new features and further advancements. They would also remain focused on offering the best experience that they can for all their communities.

When it comes to operations, Guilded will continue running as an independent product group. The legal counsel to Roblox in this transaction were Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. 

Based in San Francisco, Guilded built a platform with the goal of connecting gaming communities. This includes features and tools, like video chat, tiered voice chat, scheduling tools, integrated calendars, and much more. 

In March 2021, the organization launched its API (bot application programming interface) for simplifying bot development, enabling users with little to no programming experience to easily create bots.

The product also supports many popular games. This includes specific functionalities for a few titles such as Fortnite, League of Legends, Roblox and CS: GO. Earlier in 2021, the startup also launched an APO that’s designed to enable non-technical users create bots which could enrich their gaming communities.

According to Crunchbase, Guilded raised $10.2 million in VC funding till date which includes a $7 million Series A that was led by Matrix Partners early last year. The organization launched with the help of Y Combinator in 2017.

Founded in 2004 by Mr Erik Cassel and David Baszucki, Roblox Corporation is a US-based game developer. The company developed Roblox and first launched it in September 2006. Its current CEO since 2006 is Baszucki and the company has about 1054 employees, as of 2021.

The mission of Roblox is to create a “human co-experience platform” which allows shared experiences among its users. The game developing organization believes in a safe, diverse and civil community that inspires as well as fosters creativity along with positive relationships between people worldwide. 

Roblox released its second quarter results for FY21. The financials highlighted included a whopping 127% increase in revenue as compared to Q2 2020 to US$454.1 million. Moreover, a 35% increase in bookings was also seen. Additionally, a 42% increase in Average Daily Active Users (DAUs) outside of Canada and the United States was also seen.
